Rune Upgrading
Combine lower runes into higher ones

What is this? You can combine multiple copies of the same rune to create the next rune up the chain. This is how you turn a stockpile of common runes into the ones you actually need for runewords.

How it works: For runes El through Ort (the first nine), you need 3 of the same rune — no other ingredients. Starting from Thul, you also need a gem alongside the runes. From Pul onward, the recipe only requires 2 runes instead of 3. The gem grade varies across the chain: Chipped gems (Thul–Hel), Flawed gems (Io–Pul), Normal gems (Um–Ohm), and Flawless gems (Lo–Cham) — see the table below for exact gems. Zod cannot be upgraded — it's the highest rune in the game.

Practical tip: Never vendor or drop low runes. El, Eld, Tir, Nef — they look worthless, but every three becomes the next step up. Cube them early and your rune collection climbs passively while you farm.

Gem Upgrading
3 of the same grade = 1 of the next

What is this? Gems come in five grades: Chipped → Flawed → Normal → Flawless → Perfect. You can combine three gems of the same type and grade to produce one gem of the next grade. The recipe is identical for all gem types — ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz, amethyst, diamond, and skull all work the same way.

Why do this? Perfect gems are used in crafting recipes and socketing recipes. Never vendor gems — they're crafting currency. Cube chipped and flawed gems into perfects whenever your inventory fills up. Note: rune upgrade recipes use Flawed, Normal, and Flawless gems — not Perfects.

Also useful: Perfect gems can be socketed into armor/helms to provide resistances and other bonuses without spending runes. A Perfect Topaz in a helm gives +24% MF — cheap and effective for farming.

Socketing & Socket Clearing
Add sockets to items or clear existing ones

Adding sockets: You can add sockets to a Normal quality (white text) unsocketed item using the cube. The number of sockets you get is random — the game rolls up to the maximum allowed for that item type, then caps it based on the item's level. This is critical for runeword bases. If you need exactly 4 sockets in a Monarch shield for Spirit, you may need to try multiple times.

Socketing limits: Jewelry (rings, amulets), belts, gloves, and boots cannot be socketed. The recipe only works on Body Armor, Helms, Shields, and Weapons.

Socket clearing: If you have a socketed item with gems, runes, or jewels inside that you want to remove, use the Hel recipe. The items inside the sockets are permanently destroyed — they do not go back to your inventory. Only use this when you want to reuse the base item itself, not the contents.

Larzuk's Quest tip: Larzuk (Act V blacksmith) can add sockets to any item once per difficulty — including unique, set, rare, and magic items. He always adds the maximum possible sockets. Save this quest reward for expensive bases, not common items. One character gets three total Larzuk quests across Normal, Nightmare, and Hell.

⚠️ These recipes only work on Normal quality (white text) items. Magic, rare, unique, and set items cannot be socketed with the cube — use Larzuk's quest for those instead. Ethereal items can be socketed with the cube as long as they are Normal quality — white ethereal bases are some of the most sought-after runeword foundations in the game.

Item Upgrading (Upping)
Move unique or rare items to a higher tier base

What is this? Every item in D2R exists in three tiers: Normal → Exceptional → Elite. When you find a unique or rare item, it's tied to a specific base item. "Upping" moves that item to the next tier's base — which means higher defense (for armor) or higher damage (for weapons). Crucially, all the magical properties stay exactly the same. The item keeps every affix it had before.

Why do this? Some powerful uniques only exist on Normal bases that quickly become underpowered in Hell. Skullder's Ire is a great example — as a Normal armor its base defense is weak, but upped to Exceptional it gets a major defense boost while keeping its MF bonus and +1 to skills. Upping also increases Strength/Dexterity requirements, so plan ahead.

Important: Normal → Exceptional works for all players. Exceptional → Elite is Ladder and Single Player only — it cannot be done on non-Ladder Battle.net characters.

Ethereal items remain Ethereal after upping. Any gems, runes, or jewels in the sockets also stay intact.

Example: Skullder's Ire Before & After Upping
Normal

Gold stats are unchanged by upping. Only the base item (and its defense/str requirements) changes.
👑 Ladder/Single Player restriction: Upgrading from Exceptional to Elite requires a Ladder character or Single Player. Non-Ladder Battle.net characters are limited to Normal → Exceptional only.

Rerolling Items
Re-randomize the affixes on an item

What is this? Found a great base item but it rolled terrible affixes? Rerolling destroys the current affixes and generates a completely new set. The item type and base stay the same — but everything else is re-randomized. It's gambling, but sometimes necessary when you have a good base.

Rerolling rare items requires 6 Perfect Skulls. The item level of the result is based on your character level, not the original item, so rerolling with a high-level character gives better potential affixes.

Rerolling magic items requires 3 Perfect Gems — any type, any combination. Any magic item can be rerolled this way — rings, amulets, charms, weapons, armor. The gem type does not affect the result. Critically: for magic items, the item level (ilvl) is retained from the original item through every reroll. This means the ceiling of possible affixes never changes, no matter how many times you reroll. Choosing the right base item to reroll is everything — pick one that already dropped from a high-level source.

Warning: Rerolling is permanent. There is no preview and no undo. Reroll only items you are willing to lose the current version of entirely.

Charm Rerolling — The Skiller Hunt
Grand Charms · ilvl mechanics · Skiller farming

What is a Skiller? A Grand Charm that rolls "+1 to [Skill Tree]" as its prefix is called a Skiller. Every character wants them — they add a full extra point to every skill in that tree without spending skill points. The most valuable Skillers also have a life suffix, making them among the most traded items in the game.

The recipe: Place any Magic Grand Charm + 3 Perfect Gems (any type, any combination) in the Horadric Cube and transmute. The charm is rerolled with completely new random affixes. The gem types have zero effect on the result — use whatever you have the most of.

The most important rule: The charm's hidden item level (ilvl) is locked in permanently and carried through every reroll. If the ilvl is too low, certain affixes can never appear no matter how many times you reroll. Never reroll a charm unless you know it came from a high-level source.

ilvl Requirements for Grand Charm affixes
Affixilvl RequiredBest Drop Sources
+1 to [Skill Tree] (Skiller) ilvl 50+ Nightmare Act III (Great Marsh, Flayer Jungle) onward · Any Hell area · Any Hell Terror Zone (easiest consistent source)
+31–35 Life suffix ilvl 61+ Hell difficulty zones generally
+36–40 Life suffix ilvl 77+ Area Level 85 zones (The Pit, Ancient Tunnels, Chaos Sanctuary)
+41–45 Life suffix ("of Vita") — best in slot ilvl 91+ Any Hell Terror Zone at character level 89+ — monsters are always at least clvl+2, so every charm drop is ilvl 91+. Also: Hell Diablo (ilvl 94) · Hell Nihlathak (ilvl 95) · Hell Baal (ilvl 99)

Odds context: At ilvl 50, there is roughly a 1-in-10 chance of rolling any skiller on a given transmute. At ilvl 91+, the chance of rolling a skiller with the coveted +41–45 life suffix is approximately 1-in-333. A skiller without a life suffix is perfectly usable and tradeable. A skiller with 45 life is endgame-defining and worth significant runes.

Terror Zones changed everything: Before Terror Zones, the only way to get ilvl 91+ Grand Charms was to farm Hell Baal, Nihlathak, or Diablo specifically. Now, any monster in any Hell Terror Zone drops an ilvl 91+ charm when your character is level 89 or above — because terrorized monsters are always at least your level +2. This means the volume of perfect reroll bases has increased dramatically. A charm from a random zombie pack in a Terrorized zone is just as rollable as a "Baal Charm." Simply save every Grand Charm that drops while you farm Terror Zones and reroll them in bulk.

The practical approach: Farm Hell Terror Zones at level 89+ and pocket every Grand Charm you find — don't identify them, just keep the base. Accumulate Perfect Gems passively while you farm. When you have a stack of both, start rerolling. Since ilvl is locked permanently and never changes, there is no rush — a charm you set aside today is just as good to reroll next month. The community still uses the term "Baal Charm" as shorthand for any ilvl 91+ Grand Charm regardless of where it dropped.

Gem type reminder: Perfect Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds, Topaz, Amethysts, and Diamonds all produce identical outcomes when used in this recipe. Do not save rare crafting gems (Rubies, Amethysts) for rerolling if you also do crafted item recipes — those need those specific gem types.

⚠️ Reign of the Warlock — Skiller Enchanting: A new RotW recipe lets you add negative enemy resistance to an existing magic Grand Charm: Magic Grand Charm + Perfect Diamond + Mal Rune + Northern Worldstone Shard. This converts a plain skiller into one that also reduces enemy resistance to the charm's skill element — dramatically increasing its value. Northern Worldstone Shards drop from enemies inside Hell Terror Zones.
Small & Large Charm rerolling

The same 3 Perfect Gems recipe works on Small and Large Charms too, and ilvl is retained the same way. For Small Charms, the most desirable rolls are maximum resist + life combinations (e.g. +5% All Resistances + 20 Life) or +7% Magic Find. The highest ilvl small charms for those rolls come from Nightmare Act V areas (Crystalline Passage, Frozen River, Glacial Trail) at ilvl 61, which unlocks the +20 life and +7% MF affixes. Large Charms are rarely rerolled in practice — Grand Charms offer better single-slot value and Small Charms pack more efficiently.

Crafting
Create items with guaranteed affixes + random rolls

What is this? Crafted items are a fourth quality tier above rare, displayed in orange text. Every crafted item comes with a set of guaranteed fixed affixes based on the recipe, plus 1–4 additional random affixes on top. This means you always get the core benefit you crafted for — anything else is a bonus.

The formula: Magic Item + Specific Rune + Perfect Gem + Any Jewel = Crafted Item. The magic item must be the specific type required for each recipe slot. The jewel can be any quality — it's consumed and has no effect on the result.

There are four crafting families: Blood (life/leech/damage — Perfect Ruby), Caster (mana/Faster Cast Rate — Perfect Amethyst), Hit Power (combat procs — Perfect Sapphire), and Safety (damage reduction/resists — Perfect Emerald).

Most valuable crafts: Caster Amulets (can roll +2 skills + Faster Cast Rate), Blood Gloves (can roll crushing blow + attack speed + skills), and Caster Rings (can roll Faster Cast Rate + mana) are the most traded crafted items. High-character-level crafting yields better affix quality.

💡 Leveling tip: Craft at character level 91 or higher for the best possible affix rolls. The crafted item's level is calculated as (base item ilvl + character level) ÷ 2, and higher item level unlocks better affixes.

Quest & Special Recipes
Portals, tokens, and endgame systems

What is this? The Horadric Cube is used to open special portals and combine quest items throughout the game. These recipes are the backbone of the endgame — the Uber system, the respec system, and the Secret Cow Level all run through the cube.

Uber portal recipes must be performed in Harrogath (Act V town) in a Hell difficulty game. They do not work in Normal or Nightmare difficulty, or in any other act town.

Secret Cow Level
Opens a portal to the Cow Level — any difficulty
Wirt's Leg+ Tome of Town Portal
🐄 Red portal to the Secret Cow Level (transmute while in Act I, near the stash)
Wirt's Leg is found in Tristram — take the portal from Stony Field. In D2R, killing the Cow King no longer locks you out of future portals.
Token of Absolution
Full character respec — unlimited use if you can farm the essences
Twisted Essence of Suffering+ Charged Essence of Hatred+ Burning Essence of Terror+ Festering Essence of Destruction
✨ Token of Absolution — use it to fully respec stats and skills
Essences drop in Hell difficulty only: Twisted = Hell Andariel (~16%) or Duriel (~22%) · Charged = Hell Mephisto (~8%) · Burning = Hell Diablo (~8%) · Festering = Hell Baal (~8%). Farm Andariel or Duriel first — their drop rate is notably higher. See the Farming Guide for drop locations.
Uber Portal (Phase 1)
Opens one of three Pandemonium Event portals — Hell Harrogath only
Key of Terror+ Key of Hate+ Key of Destruction
🔴 Random portal: Matron's Den, Furnace of Pain, or Forgotten Sands — each opens once per game
Keys drop in Hell only (~8% each): Key of Terror = Hell Countess · Key of Hate = Hell Summoner · Key of Destruction = Hell Nihlathak. Each portal contains an Uber boss that drops one of three quest items. See the Farming Guide for key farming locations.
Uber Portal (Phase 2)
Opens the portal to Uber Tristram — Hell Harrogath only
Baal's Eye+ Diablo's Horn+ Mephisto's Brain
🔴 Portal to Uber Tristram — face Uber Diablo, Uber Mephisto, and Uber Baal simultaneously
Each Phase 1 Uber boss drops one quest item. Killing all three in Uber Tristram causes the last boss to drop a Hellfire Torch — a unique large charm with +3 to all skill trees of a randomly determined class and powerful stats. This is one of the most powerful items in the game.
