A note on build guides
Build guides in D2R are deep rabbit holes where bad advice costs real time. A misallocated skill point on a Hardcore character can mean starting over. We're not going to pretend we've tested every variation exhaustively — instead, we'll point you to the builds worth researching and the sites that do this properly.

Sorceress
The Best Starting Class
Teleport lets you skip dangerous packs and reach bosses in seconds. High damage, fragile defenses. The most popular first character in D2R — and for good reason. Most veterans roll a Sorceress first on every new ladder season to gear their other characters.
Best for BeginnersCasterTop MF Farmer
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Blizzard Sorceress
"Blizzy"
A massive ice storm that obliterates entire screens. The definitive beginner Sorceress — safe, powerful, and one of the best MF farmers in the game. Destroys Mephisto with the Moat Trick.
Meteorb Sorceress
Meteor + Frozen Orb hybrid
Splits damage between Fire and Cold so you always have an answer for immunities. Slightly lower peak damage than pure Blizzard but far fewer dead zones in Hell. Great if you hate being stuck.
Necromancer
The Most Forgiving Class
Your minions absorb hits and do the killing. You stay safely behind them. Almost no gear required to be effective — skeleton strength scales with skill level alone. Ideal for players who prefer a strategic, low-pressure playstyle.
Very ForgivingSummonerGreat Solo
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Summon Necromancer
"Summonmancer"
Command an army of skeletons while you curse enemies and chain Corpse Explosions across entire packs. The safest build to learn D2R on — nearly impossible to die if you stay behind your minions.
Bone Necromancer
"Bonemancer"
A caster build using Bone Spear and Bone Spirit. Deals magical damage — almost nothing is immune. More active and hands-on than Summonmancer, with a higher damage ceiling when geared.
Paladin
The Most Beloved Class
Durable, versatile, and powerful. Passive auras buff you and your allies constantly. Universally loved in group play. Has the most famous build in D2R history — the Hammerdin — which deals magical damage and handles virtually every situation in Hell with ease.
Beginner FriendlyMelee / MagicGroup & Solo
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Hammerdin
Blessed Hammer
Spiraling magical hammers that almost nothing in the game resists. One of the safest, most powerful endgame builds. Dominates Chaos Sanctuary and Baal runs. The community's single most-played build.
Smiter Paladin
"Uber Paladin"
Smite ignores enemy defense and is the only build that can efficiently solo the Uber bosses for Hellfire Torch charms. A natural second build once your Hammerdin is geared — same class, completely different purpose.
Amazon
Ranged, Fast, Deadly
Two very different playstyles: javelin-based lightning caster (Javazon) or pure bow build (Bowazon). The Javazon is one of the strongest endgame builds in D2R. The Bowazon is highly gear-dependent but delivers the classic archer fantasy.
ModerateRangedStrong Endgame
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Javazon
Lightning Fury / Charged Strike
Lightning Fury fires a javelin that explodes into chain lightning on impact, clearing entire rooms in one throw. Charged Strike handles bosses. One of the strongest overall builds in D2R. Note: javelins run out — always carry spares.
Bowazon
Strafe / Multishot
Physical bow build using Strafe and Multishot. Weak without a strong bow, excellent once you have one. Classic fantasy, high skill ceiling. Requires Windforce or Faith runeword to truly shine at endgame.
Barbarian
Tanky, Loud, and Satisfying
The Barbarian hits hard, absorbs punishment, and shouts war cries that buff your whole party. Gear-dependent — feels sluggish early, becomes nearly unkillable once equipped. Battle Orders alone doubles your health pool. Beloved in group Baal runs.
ModerateMeleeGear Dependent
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Whirlwind Barbarian
"WW Barb"
Spin through packs dealing damage to everything in range — you pass through entire screens of enemies dealing hits to all of them simultaneously. The classic Barbarian fantasy. Dominant in Chaos Sanctuary and Baal runs once properly geared. Patience required early on.
Frenzy Barbarian
"Frenzier"
Frenzy stacks speed with each hit — starts slow, becomes a blur. Dual-wields for a frantic attack rhythm. More single-target focused than WW Barb. A strong alternative if you want a different feel from the same class.
Druid
Shape-Shifter or Elementalist
Two completely different identities — you either cast wind and storm spells at range, or transform into a werewolf and brawl in melee. The Wind Druid is the stronger beginner choice. The Werewolf is for players who want a melee challenge with some unique flair.
ModerateElemental / MeleeGood Solo
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Wind Druid
Tornado / Hurricane
Tornado deals physical damage — almost nothing is immune. Hurricane creates a passive cold storm around you at all times. Durable and consistent in Hell. One catch: Tornado has a curved trajectory that genuinely takes time to master.
Werewolf Druid
"Fury Druid"
Transform into a werewolf and use Fury — a fast, multi-hit melee attack. Strong attack speed and life leech make you surprisingly durable in close range. More gear-dependent than Wind Druid but a satisfying and unique playstyle.
Assassin
Traps, Shadows, and Speed
The most mechanically complex class in D2R. The Trapsin plays like a summoner and is the most accessible entry point. The melee builds require precise combo timing and are not recommended as a first character. Highly rewarding for players who invest the time.
AdvancedTrap Caster / MeleeStrong Endgame
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Lightning Sentry Trapsin
"Trapsin"
Place 5 lightning sentries that fire automatically, then reposition and manage their placement. Plays almost like a summoner. The most beginner-accessible Assassin build and one of the best solo endgame characters in the game.
Kicksin
Dragon Talon
A rapid melee kick combo build that became significantly stronger after the Mosaic runeword was added. Fast, active, and satisfying once you get the rhythm. Not a beginner build — come here after you understand the game.
Warlock · Reign of the Warlock DLC
The 8th Class — Brand New
✦ Added February 2026 · Requires DLC
A dark scholar who commands demons, manipulates weapons with their mind, and unleashes chaos magic. Three skill trees: Demonic Binding (summoning), Eldritch Weapons (weapon hexes and manipulation), and Arts of Chaos (magic and fire). The Warlock can also wield a two-handed weapon in one hand while using an off-hand simultaneously — a unique mechanic no other class has.

⚠ The Warlock is only a few weeks old. Build guides are still being tested and refined by the community. The recommendations below are early-access picks — treat them as starting points, not settled wisdom. Check Maxroll and Icy Veins regularly as tier lists and guides mature over the coming weeks.
Step 2 — Pick a Build to Research
Demon Summoner
Demon tree — Goatmen / Defilers
Bind and command demons — Goatmen for melee, Tainted for ranged, Defilers for soul-binding. Plays like a Necromancer summoner in spirit but with a distinct active twist: consuming a bound demon grants the Warlock temporary buffs and traits. Very forgiving early on.
Chaos Caster
Chaos tree — Magic / Fire AoE
Large AoE fire spells, entropy clouds, and ground sigils that alter enemy states. The pure caster archetype of the Warlock. Plays similarly to a Sorceress but with unique space-control mechanics. Early reports suggest strong clear speed in Terror Zones.
